We’ve all been in that situation when you’re feeling miserable and angry, and someone pipes up… “Is it that time of the month!?”

Ha ha, very funny.

Interestingly enough, there is a scientific link between your mental health and where you are in your cycle. If you have ever felt more sad or anxious when you are on your period, there is a reason why this is the case.

Can periods have an impact on your mental health?

Yes, your mental health and periods are connected. This means your mental health can affect your period, and vice versa.

PMS can cause mood swings alongside bloating, cramping and breast tenderness. If you have depression or an anxiety disorder, you may find that your PMS and your fluctuating hormones make your symptoms worse.

As well as PMS, some women also suffer from premenstrual dysphoric disorder, or PMDD for short. It’s estimated that PMDD affects between three to eight per cent of women, and can cause severe mood swings, depression and even panic attacks.

Anxiety and stress can also have an impact on the length and regularity of your periods too. Studies have shown that women who suffer from anxiety or depression often have shorter, irregular cycles. You may even find that stress may cause you to miss a period. This is your body’s way of saying that it doesn’t want you to get pregnant at this moment in time.

Five things you can do to supercharge your mood when you are on your period

If you’ve been hit with the double whammy of a period and a low mood, here are a few things you can do that will help.

  • Get plenty of sleep. Sleep helps your body and mind rest, so don’t be afraid to crawl under the covers and get some well-deserved shut-eye
  • Do some exercise. You may raise your eyebrows at this one, but exercise increases your endorphin levels and can improve your mood. Even lacing up your trainers and going for a gentle walk can help
  • Drink lots of water. Dehydration can make you more anxious and tense and reduce the quality of sleep you get. Say no to coffee and alcohol and try and drink eight glasses of H2O a day
  • Eat healthily. As tempting as it may be to dig out the takeaway menus, eating healthy food can boost your mood. Fruit, vegetables and fibre-rich whole grains will help you feel better. If you don’t feel like cooking, prep food in advance or stock up on healthy ready meals
  • Do something that makes you smile. Whether a Zoom call with friends, chilling in a bubble bath or binging your favourite Netflix show – doing things that make you happy elevates your mood and well-being.
